Buzz TV: In the Green Room with Charlotte Martin

Charlotte Martin's intimate performance on April 13, 2012 was emotional, seductive, fun and soulful. On stage was Martin, her piano and her vocals. That's all she needed because the girl can belt it! TownSquareBuzz sat down with the singer/songwriter before taking the stage at the McKinney Performing Arts Center's Courtroom Theater. Come to find out she recently overcame a major health condition that changed how she sees herself and others.

Martin released her latest DVD/CD "Hiding Places" on April 3, 2012.

Never mind, I used the direct YouTube link and it worked. Wonderful interview! I love that they asked her advice to Hollie Cavanaugh because I'm a huge Idol watcher! Hollie is one of my faves.

Apologies for being so late posting about the Texas show. Been quite busy the past several days!

McKinney, Texas is a beautiful city, and the downtown square was very busy with live music at a few venues and lots of people sitting in outdoor dining areas..looked and smelled like lots of famous Texas BBQ. Hanging out around the Performing Arts Center (the former courthouse) before the show, it was interesting people watching.

Quite fun observing the excitement on Char fans faces as they approached, and then listening to several fans talk about the last time they had seen Char..many had not seen her since the last time she performed in Texas. I must admit it was strange for Heidi and I to go to a Char show, and recognize only 1 Char fan. (Robert). Missed seeing all your familiar faces!

After entry, we went to the balcony area...thought about the main floor, but figured we would get better video from there. Well, has already been stated that the performance was very powerful and intimate. The audience was very respectful….heard no chatter during Char’s songs.

Not even going to attempt to do a blow by blow account of each song or anything like that…not much good at that sort of thing, so will just let the videos do the talking for us. We loved each and every song…they were all great. Sorry we did not get Darkest Hour.

It was a privilege to meet Stella….she is so precious. The young lady with Stella in the picture from the meet and greet is a former nanny. Char introduced us to her, and told us she is in a band and to check them out if we get a chance. Have done so since, and they are very good! Will post soon about them in the “other artists” section…in the meantime, for your info:

Quite a few fans stayed after the show and met and talked with Charlotte, Ken, and Lisa. Fun meeting a few of them.

Thanks for the comments on the videos…was so happy to be able to record them and share with all of you. Well, this is short and not all that informative, but I think you get the picture.

Cheers!

Here's my review of the McKinney show:

Friday the 13th became a lucky day for everyone at McKinney Performing Arts Center in McKinney Texas on April 13, 2012, when Charlotte Martin gave a powerful and inspiring performance in this beautiful setting. The large and appreciative audience included many Texan fans who have been waiting to see Charlotte for years. Many others were seeing her for the first time, but surely became fans before the evening ended. This unique venue is a former courthouse building that has been turned into an arts center with several theaters and galleries. Charlotte performed in the Courtroom Theater, a former courtroom which is still used on occasion for actual court proceedings. (Charlotte’s first words to the audience: “Do you feel like you’re gonna go to jail?”) This was a solo show, with just Charlotte and her Yamaha digital piano. The lighting was excellent, and so was the sound, thanks to the audio wizardry of Ken Andrews.

It was so great to see Charlotte in top musical and physical form, after all the struggles she’s been through. Her singing and playing have never been stronger. She was in complete command of her voice and her piano, and she looked radiantly beautiful. During her set, Charlotte took the audience, with words and music, through the difficult journey she’s traveled the past few years. After being formally introduced by the Mayor Pro Tem of the city of McKinney, Charlotte took the stage and began with a sparsely accompanied and very emotional version of “Dancing on Needles.” This was followed by a Robyn cover, “Hang with Me” leading into “Is This Called Desire.” Emotional highlights of the set included “Animal,” “Warrior,” “Redeemed,” and the rarely performed Pearl Jam cover “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town.” “The Stalker Song” drew huge laughter from the audience -- apparently few of them had heard it before.

Citing the faith in God that guided her through her recent struggles, Charlotte mentioned she’s contemplating an album of Christian music, and she introduced a beautiful and powerful new song in that genre, tentatively titled “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made,” a phrase taken from Psalm 139. A touching moment followed when Charlotte brought her beautiful one year-old daughter Stella onstage and introduced her. She ended the set with “The Dance,” and (in response to a shouted request from the audience) closed the show with an encore of “Wild Horses.”

After the show, Charlotte signed CDs, gave hugs, chatted, and took photos with everyone, and as usual she was completely unhurried and sincere. Charlotte is always so generous with her time and accessible to her fans – far more than the typical artist -- and this night was no exception. Charlotte mentioned several times that she hadn’t performed in Texas “in six years” or “since 2006.” However, after the show some fans reminded her that she did play at the Parish Room in Austin in September 2007 on the “Never Say Never” tour with Ken Andrews. Charlotte’s response: “I tried to block that tour out of my mind.” Fans, old and new, who attended this night sincerely hope Charlotte’s return to Texas will be much sooner than 5 years from now.
