hi all!

ahhh. what a great show last nite at the bootleg theater in los angeles and a great set by char mar to release her new album 'dancing on needles'! there were so many familiar faces and friends there. it was cool to see everyone.

so i think that this special show deserves a special topic.

i attempted to tweet the entire setlist live but the connection was bad so it got cut off (as you can see from the previous thread). but here's the entire setlist...

dancing on needles
cut the cord
volcano
truth cerium
under the gravel skies
starlight
animal
tremble
every time it rains -> hyperballad (!!!!)
im normal please date me
stromata
warrior
the dance

she also had 'beautiful life' on the setlist but ran out of time. here's the pic of it:

char came out in a leopard print dress...she became her album! Smile she was very cute and very preggo. Smile she powered through the set. lots of the best depressing songs she has ever written were on there. i love it! and she played 'every time it rains' and outroed with hyperballad. um. now i love that version too!! ahh. warrior is growing on me a lot. and she continues to crack herself and everyone up with 'im normal...' Very Happy and 'under the gravel skies' was gorgeous. i was able to remember 'truth cerium.' char mar lamented over wanting to play more shows...she wanted to but was so sick for so long...it's understandable. the fact that she's doing these shows now, last nite? at 8 months preggo? amazing. oh. and what is it about 'starlight'? i love it so much. last nite's version was the best thus far...much cleaner for a new song.

ive got videos. ive got a recording but i think someone else does too so i defer to them Wink

it was awesome to see so many friends there. everyone i talked to...you know who you are...there is never enough time and it goes so fast. but so great to reconnect for a few moments and share this great music.

thank you char mar for doing these shows...it couldnt have been easy but we love you and appreciate you and are grateful. <3 now, go have that baby girl! Wink

p.s. PLEASE feel free to post your REVIEWS AND PHOTOS AND VIDS from the show last nite!

Hah! I love the "Cut the Cord (literally!)" on the song list.

Well, sounds like she got through the tour successfully! Now she can rest- and she'll need all she can handle!

Can't wait to see the vids. Thanks folks for recording!

Had a great night! Her playing and vocals were fantastic. She blew me away just like the last LA show :] She looked like a true goddess belting it out with an 8 month preggo belly! My favorite off the new album is Animal and my two favorites of the night were Every time it Rains & Under The Gravel Skies. Nice seeing you Jules!

Couple favorite pictures:

Oh wow! Lovely photos everyone!! I get into the concert with my camera in hand but when she walks on stage and begins playing I am just frozen and completely forget to take pictures!

Was such a wonderful concert - best weekend I have had in a long long time!

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Cut the Cord with Fern. I love love love drums and that song. But tonight's solo version of Cut the Cord was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. It was like being hit by lightning - I don't think I breathed for a good three minutes during that song.

Good music with great friends...couldn't of asked for anything more.

Oh and Jules - one day will will get our pie!! Oh yes, we will!!
(Happy Birthday by the way Jules!!)

Oh THANK YOU JON for recording the show - oooooh I can't wait to listen to this again!!

Oh and forgot to mention - did anyone get attacked by that racoon while waiting for the doors to open?!?!

It was soooo cute - I hope it got some food and that its leg heals up (it had a little limp) Sad

I still think that the skunk, raccoon, and bouncy house are the ultimate trifecta of things pre-concert

What did you guys think of the opener? This is not an insult but didn't he sound like Adam Sandler doing a Bob Dylan impression? Razz

That's always how it is for the opener. Would be a rough gig. I got a kick out of him because he played banjo and so does my husband, a instrument you rarely see these days.

Thanks Erin! I can see me and my sister in that pic Smile

Well, since I have been absent from the Char community for like... FOREVER...though I should at least contribute something. A couple of pics from Saturday:

Though I bet that the camera mounted there that you can see in the pictures (Likely a Canon 5D Mark II or 7D and a 16-35 f/2.8L lens) is capturing some amazing video, far beyond what I can achieve here. Wink

it was a good show. i know an hour is standard fare for char shows, but for some reason it still felt REALLY short to me. and i was hoping for a few more older songs, but i get why it was so DON heavy.

i know people were talking in other threads about not being able to recognize truth cerium ... maybe it's because it's my favorite on the record, but i had no problems identifying it Laughing

animal was my fave from the night

and i think i might be alone in this but warrior really didn't do much for me Confused

Thanks everyone for the pictures, audio, and video. After my pictures from NY turned out so poorly, I didn't even bother with the camera in LA. I need a new camera and/or a clue how to take pictures (probably both). I'm photographically challenged!

I agree it seemed so short. It always does, but especially this time. Maybe it was because I knew it would be her last performance for awhile. But I loved every minute of it! "Under the Gravel Skies" was so beautiful -- even better than last time, I think.

Evidently, some people in the audience were Charlotte's friends from LA (my Mommy friends, etc.) who had never seen her play. She seemed worried they would think she's nuts or something, especially when singing "I'm Normal, Please Date Me." Smile

The sound quality and live sound engineering by Ken also deserve to be mentioned, as they were also excellent. The Kurzweil keyboard sounded great. When I first arrived, I was a little disappointed it wasn't an acoustic piano. Sometimes, the sound quality of keyboards can be lacking, but in this case, the Kurzweil sound was very clean and powerful.

This was such a powerful musical and emotional experience, and I'm in awe at her talent and her willingness and ability to perform at this stage of pregnancy. Amazing.
