[Just as a side note, it amazes me to realize the diverse talents we have on this board. You all inspire me!]

Without further delay -

Okay Dean, your turn take over from here. Smile

Thanks Lisa, for putting my work up here. Thanks to Erin for the compliment.

Here is my bio:

I am a portrait artist from Brighton, Michigan. I grew up in Hartland, Michigan, and have spent most of my life in Livingston County. I have been doing portraits since high school, and attended Ferris State for its Commercial Art/Visual Communication Program, where I obtained an Associates Degree.

I work primarily in ink. The ink portraits I do have a style that I liken to old 1920ís advertisements, as I tend to like the art nouveau style of the 1890ís- 1920ís. They are designed to flatter the subject using slight exaggerations, such as lengthening eyelashes, adding highlights to the eyes and hair, and sometimes completely altering the style and length of the hair. I have been known to spend in excess of 12 hours on the hair alone. The dots I use in the stippling effects are sometimes 100 or more to an inch. I have begun to work in monochromatic pencil and colored pencil, due in part the soft looking effects that can be achieved, and also due to its popularity.

The ink portrait I have here is one of my earlier ones, and there is no stippling and not much to the hair, but I hope to upload more of my artwork in the future.

Thanks again,
Dean

A Ferris alum?
No shit!

I'm currently a sophomore at Ferris. In the Music Industry Management program.

Anyone who works well in ink has my absolute respect. Ink is one of those mediums that I think looks so awesome when it's done well, but frustrates the hell out of me, because no matter what I do, it looks awful when I attempt it.

Love to look at it, absolutely hate to do it.

That's right....I don't think they had a Music Industry Program when I was there. I think the thing I learned most from Ferris was that in order have a job in graphic design, I was going to have to get coffee and run errands for the designers for the first year, and after that I wouldn't see the sun on work days. My teachers actually taught us that. So I began to love illustration and went that route. Doesn't pay nearly as much, mind you, and I'm not famous (yet), but I love it...

Yes, ink is tough. I started doing the ink portraits in college. The ones I do now have a lot more depth, I'll be scanning some more soon. Thanks for the compliment..... Smile

BTW, as a general note, I am thinking of doing Charlotte's portrait, and I would like to know if that is OK with her. I have some photos that I printed from various sources. It would definitely be in pencil, done in more of a sketch style, which I have been doing more of lately. I would definitely post it when I am done.

Oh, Lissa, forgot to mention....I went to your site - very nice photos...good photography deserves to be commended, and I imagine that photographing bands is pretty hard. Plus, a good camera is key....I just have my 10 year old 35mm still.

So how IS Ferris these days?

Yeah, it's a pretty new program. I believe it started in '97, so the program didn't even graduate its first class until just a few years ago.

Thanks for the compliments on the photography.

I think a portrait of Char would be amazing. Smile
